Sailing in movies

Here are some of the movies on sailing I have seen in my life. As far as the honorable directors have managed to portray it. Some of the movies are about competitions and in some movies the yachts are used as a backdrop for a crime thriller or the depiction of comical or funny adventures. What sailing movies have you seen?

USA (1992)

Director: Carroll Ballard

Cast: Jennifer Grey, Rebecca Miller, Matthew Modine, Stellan Skarsgård, Jack Thompson, Ned Vaughn, Cliff Robertson

A fantastic movie about cruiser yachts and the love story of two young people. Modin and Grey almost destroy their relationship by arguing constantly due a very complex and responsible event: the sailing championship America’s Cup. The movie has loads of beautiful and breathtaking spectacles of the competition, the construction of the yachts and information on the subject.

Director: Jerry Rothwell, Louise Osmond

Cast: Donald Crowhurst, Clare Crowhurst, Simon Crowhurst, Bernard Moitessier, Francoise Moitessier de Cazalet

One of the most notable sailing stories of the 20th century, actually a more strange than fantastic story with lots of adventure. Donald Crowhurst – one of the nine sailors who joined the “London Times” sponsored competition in 1969. The task of the contestants was to make a solo journey around the world and the competition was highly known. Crowhurst is an engineer turned sailor and hasthe most experience. He was also financially responsible for his yacht. After just a few weeks on the way the yacht started leaking. To continue on his way into the dangerous waters near the Cape Horn would be suicide and turning back would mean humiliation and financial breakdown. Deep Water is a story about ego, ambitions, imagination and madness.

Dead Calm

Director: Phillip Noyce

Cast: Nicole Kidman, Sam Neil, Billy Zane

A married couple while recuperating from the loss of their son set out on a yacht in the sea. While having a rest at the sea they notice a sailer and an unknown man fleeing the sailer on a lifeboat. The man keeps telling the couple that the sailer is sinking. While the new passenger is resting, the curious husband takes the boat to explore the sailer, leaving his wife alone with the stranger. The husband sees such scenes on the sailer that make the skin crawl.

USA (1992)

Director: Thom Eberhardt

Cast: Kurt Russell, Martin Short, Mary Kay Place, Dan Butler, Tom McGowan

A city family inherits an old yacht that once belonged to the actor Clark Gable. They decide to take a trip to enjoy the hot tropical sun, the blue skies and the sea. The captain of the Hervey yacht turns out to be an interesting man, right out of stories about pirates. He has the eye-patch of the old sea wolves too. Thanks to him, the Harvey family have to spend their vocation running away from criminals and even from the police of Cuba!

Germany (2006)

Director: Hans Horn

Cast: Susan May Pratt, Niklaus Lange, Ali Hillis

A weekend on the yacht of old schoolmates turn into a tragedy. The young people decide to take a swim in the open sea far from the shore and jump into the water forgetting just the one thing – to lower the ladder! They can not get back on the yacht without it and thus become the captives of the endless water. The party makes an unexpected turn to the fight for survival… The thriller “Open Water 2: Adrift” is based on real life events.

Fool’s Gold

Director: Andy Tennant

Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Kate Hudson, Donald Sutherland.

Another movie about the seeking of the hidden treasure. This time it is the dowry of the Queen of Spain 0 40 boxes of gems and gold that were lost in the Caribbean in 1715. An obsessed treasure hunter is looking for the gold, but he has competition. Anyone is used to the beautiful landscapes, pretty actors and a huge portion of humor characteristic to such movies. They are not even driving sailboats, but motorboats, but the movie is sunny, windy and funny nevertheless!
